Why did you decide to support/mentor the robotics team?

I’m very interested in supporting high school students in seeking a STEM education. This is one of the primary goals of FIRST, and the experiences the kids gain from FIRST Robotics can foster a greater interest in a STEM career. In addition, as an experienced engineer, I felt I could provide guidance to the team to help establish a long-term FIRST presence at Fishers High School.

What division do you mentor?

I’m mentoring the Systems Design team and providing support for the program management of the build season.

What background experience did you have before coming sponsoring the team?

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Aero Engineering from Purdue University with 30+ years experience in gas turbine engineering and program management. I’m currently the Chief Engineer, Helicopter Programs at Rolls-Royce.

Did you know anything about robotics before sponsoring?

Yes. My son Nick participated in FIRST last year as a member of the programming team. His participation exposed me to the challenges the team and mentor’s face.

What is your favorite part of the team?

My favorite part is seeing what the team is capable of doing in a very short period of time. In addition, I value the initiative, creativity and passion the team have.

What type of music do you like?

I tend toward heavier alternative, to hard rock fusion. Think Joe Satriani, Nirvana, Rise Against, Nine Inch Nails along with the classics from my childhood – Led Zeppelin, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc.

What is your favourite flavor of ice cream?

My favorites vary. I’m currently on a salted-carmel kick.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Probably reading – mostly science fiction/cyberpunk.

Will you be voting for Kanye in 2020?

That would be a no!

Why do you think people should join robotics?

For the experience of working a fast paced, unique design, business, program management and fundraising problem with a group of enthusiastic and energetic classmates. I also believe it gives the members a chance to be involved in real, hands on STEM activities.
